Cypress

From coast to coast, cypress trees are a mainstay of the American landscape. They live for hundreds of years, grow to towering heights, and produce some of the world’s finest wood.

While there are 14 different species of cypress that exist, only a handful grow in the U.S. The Monterey cypress, for example, is synonymous with California’s Monterey Bay region. When it comes to planting and caring for a cypress tree in your backyard, you’ll want to choose a spot that receives plenty of sunlight and use moist soil. Also, be sure that you are choosing the right specimen for your region. Frequently remove any weeds and prune dead branches in order for the tree to thrive. With proper care, you can expect your cypress to withstand the elements, insects, and most plant diseases.

Did You Know?

Cypress trees in swamps tend to grow “knees,” or woody protrusions believed to supply oxygen to submerged roots.
