2019 was another fantastic year for High Tech Landscapes, bringing award-winning landscaping to residents and businesses across New Jersey. As we turn the calendar to 2020, let’s take a look at the top landscaping trends for the year ahead. Here’s what we’re seeing, both from our own projects and around the internet:
Custom Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting has always been a must-have for safety and navigation, but it’s also becoming a creative outlet for homeowners. Meanwhile, lighting designers are finding new ways to conceal LED fixtures, further enhancing the ambiance that lighting can bring. Add in programmable options such as timers and motion sensors, and it’s clear to see that lighting is becoming an integral part of landscape design.
Fountains
A fountain is aesthetically charming, and the sound of water is universally soothing. Even a modestly sized water feature can give your outdoor space a private resort feel. Combining an emphasis on lighting, our top fountain pick for 2020 is a pool fountain with LED lights at the crest.
Home Gardening
Consumers continue to seek local and organic foods. Where fresher to source produce from than your own backyard? Rosemary, thyme, mint, and other herbs are able to thrive year-round in New Jersey (winter included). Plant lettuce, carrots, kale, and beets by mid-summer to harvest in early fall. Radishes and spinach can be planted in early fall to be harvested later in the season. Need to make extra space for all of these delicious ingredients? Try a vertical garden! Porcelain Patio Flooring
Porcelain is perfect for your patio. We love the alliteration, and more importantly, the application of this beautiful material typically reserved for more fragile items. One landscaping firm in Minnesota explains:
“It doesn’t absorb moisture when it freezes, allowing for expansion, so it lives a good outdoor lifetime of quality. Porcelain tile is versatile and it lasts. If you have a high foot traffic area, it’s the perfect solution. It’s dense and resistant to scruffs and scratches. And, it simply looks amazing inside and outside the home!”
Repurposed Containers
DIY garden design is fun, easy, and sustainable. As much as we love taking care of your landscape for you, we also encourage you to let your creative spirit shine through. Don’t worry; you don’t have to be “artsy.” Simply look around your home for materials that can be used as containers for plants—boxes, crates, drawers, and the like. Or, visit a craft store and pick out items that spark inspiration.
